Maasai Mara National Reserve
The Masai Mara features a stunning kaleidoscope of wild and rugged landscapes, warm and welcoming people and an exciting array of creatures big and small. World famous for hosting the epic Great Migration, the Masai Mara welcomes 1,5 million wildebeests onto its sprawling savannahs each July through October. The Masai Mara National Reserve and conservancies are brimming with life and offer safari travellers a wide variety of activities to choose from. Whether you take to the skies for a high-flying hot-air balloon adventure at sunrise or hit the road for a 4×4 safari, you’re sure to leave the Masai Mara with unforgettable experiences and lifelong memories.
Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru National Park in central Kenya is a compact wildlife sanctuary built around the alkaline Lake Nakuru, famous for its fluctuating populations of flamingos and more than 450 recorded bird species. Established in 1968 and later designated a major rhino sanctuary, the park hosts both black and white rhinoceros alongside lions, leopards, buffaloes, zebras, and the rare Rothschild’s giraffe.
Its mix of soda lake, acacia woodland, grasslands, and rocky viewpoints such as Baboon Cliff creates diverse habitat and scenic landscapes, making it a prime destination for birdwatching, photography, and game drives within a short distance of Nakuru town and about three hours from Nairobi.
Lake Naivasha National Park
Lake Naivasha is a large freshwater lake in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, located near the town of Naivasha northwest of Nairobi at about 1,884 m above sea level. It is one of the few freshwater Rift Valley lakes and has no visible outlet, yet remains fresh, fed mainly by the Malewa and Gilgil rivers. The lake supports a diverse ecosystem with over 400 bird species and a substantial hippopotamus population, making it a premier destination for birdwatching and nature tourism. The surrounding area also features wildlife like giraffes, zebras, buffaloes and antelope, especially on nearby Crescent Island Game Sanctuary, and supports activities such as boat safaris, fishing, cycling, and hiking. Lake Naivasha’s shores are a centre for floriculture and agriculture, though water use and environmental pressure pose ongoing management challenges.
Amboseli National Park
Amboseli National Park is a renowned wildlife reserve in southern Kenya, famous for its large herds of African elephants and exceptional safari experiences set against the iconic backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro (visible from within Kenya). The park covers about 392 km² at the core of a broader ecosystem and features a mix of savannah grasslands, acacia woodlands, seasonal lake basins, swamps, and marshes fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro’s slopes. Amboseli supports hundreds of bird species and abundant mammals including lions, cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos and many more, making it one of East Africa’s most accessible places to observe wildlife up close.
Samburu National Reserve
Samburu National Reserve is a striking wildlife conservation area in northern Kenya’s Samburu County, about 320–350 km north of Nairobi, set along the Ewaso Nyiro River in a dramatic semi-arid landscape of acacia plains, rocky hills, and riverine forests. It covers roughly 165 km² and is part of a larger protected ecosystem with Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves. The reserve is especially famous for its “Samburu Special Five” Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx, gerenuk, and Somali ostrich species adapted to its dry environment as well as large herds of elephants, lions, leopards, and over 450 bird species.
